There's No Such Thing as Clearing Your Mind. Try Mental Fasting Instead.

Let’s be real: the world is a lot right now. Between doomscrolling, non-stop notifications, another tragic school shooting, political upheaval, and the 24/7 circus that is the internet, our poor brains are running on fumes. No wonder we’re stressed, distracted, and weirdly convinced we need to buy that banana slicer from Instagram at 2 a.m.

It’s time for a hard reset. Enter: Mental Fasting.

What is Mental Fasting?

Think of mental fasting as a cleanse—but for your mind, not your fridge. Mental fasting is an intentional break from digital distractions, toxic news cycles, and that endless to-do list that keeps you up at night. By creating space for stillness, you can reclaim your focus, lower stress levels, and (gasp!) actually hear yourself think again.

How to Start (No, You Don’t Have to Meditate for 3 Hours in a Cave)

Reflect without the internet’s opinion – Spend 5 minutes each night journaling your thoughts. No filters, no likes—just you and your unedited brain.

Commune with your coffee – Instead of scrolling while sipping your morning brew, just drink it. Smell it. Taste it. Pretend you're in a fancy commercial. Bonus points if you dramatically stare out the window like a mysterious poet.

The silent walk challenge – Go for a walk without your phone. No music, no podcasts, no texts. Just you, your thoughts, and realizing how loud birds actually are.

Grocery store zen mode – Leave your phone in the car while you shop. (This is one of my faves!) Navigate the aisles without a list and see what your brain actually remembers. Disclaimer: This may result in unnecessary snack purchases. No regrets.

The art of doing nothing – Sit down for 5 minutes and do absolutely nothing. No scrolling, no talking, no thinking about your to-do list. Just think. Or dream. Or simply breathe.

Talk to a human (yes, in person) – Call up a friend, knock on a neighbor’s door, or strike up a conversation with a stranger in line at the coffee shop. Social skills—still a thing!

Write a letter like it’s 1999 – Grab a pen and paper and write an actual, handwritten note to someone. No emojis, no autocorrect, just pure, old-school human connection. Bonus: Your handwriting will finally get some use.
