The Art of Wintering: Rest, Reflect, Reconnect

It’s officially 2025, which means most people are making big goals and going after them. While I used to make New Year’s resolutions, I found my energy usually faded around spring, and I would revert back to whatever habits I was trying to break in the first place.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon a book called Wintering by Katherine May. I’d never heard this term before, but I tore through the book, as if it was an answer to a question I wasn’t even aware I’d asked.

In the book, Katherine talks about the importance of rest and reflection. This struck such a chord at that time in my life; so much so, that I now don’t even “start” my year until spring and use winter to nourish, rest, and ideate. (Though this month, my newest thriller, When She’s Gone, launches 1.14, and true to my wintering roots, I am not doing many in-person events in order to honor my need for rest.)

For most people, this idea of resting at the start of the year feels impossible. And doing LESS, instead of more? In a world obsessed with productivity, wouldn’t that be seen as lazy?

No.

In fact, it makes you human.

You see, we were never meant to work around the clock. We are not machines. We are not machines. And because we are not machines, rest is not only necessary, it’s productive. (Animals go into hibernation for a reason.)

On today’s Unreachable podcast, Alex and I dive into all things wintering: what it is, why it matters, and how to embrace this sacred period of rest, reflection, and reconnection.

In a world that never stops, wintering invites us to slow down, set boundaries, and restore our energy.

Here’s how you can start wintering today:

  1. Set Unreachable Windows: Choose specific times in your day (like the first hour after waking up or during meals) to be tech-free and engage in quiet reflection.

  2. Create Sacred Space: Designate a cozy, tech-free corner in your home for reading, journaling, or simply being still.

  3. Embrace the Pause: Allow yourself to simply be. Take walks, savor slow meals, and practice gratitude for the present moment.
